That’s lovely to hear, many thanks
Ok, first question, can you tell us about yourself?
Yes, I’m a family man, I live a fairly simple life filled with love and happiness from my wonderful wife, daughter and lovely Whippet. We laugh a lot and try to live a wholesome fun life. We work hard and try to find a good balance between this and free time. We love our holidays and this gives us good motivation to work hard. Keen Snowboarders and also beach goers. Huge lovers of nature and animals.
What got you into music, and what are your earliest memories, for instance, the bands, or artists you first remember getting into?
I first got heavily into music at the start of secondary school, trying a few different instruments like the trombone and violin till I eventually found drums and percussion. I loved the early electronic stuff that started to emerge in the late 80s and early 90s. Artists and bands like Prodigy and the more obscure stuff like Adamski. I was also into sounds that my parents listened to, Depeche Mode and Pink Floyd, finding I went on to listen to a lot of Floyd as I got a bit older.
I had a friend at Uni who switched me on to a pair of producers who are/were called Fila Brazilia.
I was instantly hooked to their use of electronic and playful sounds. They made a variety of feels that always hit the spot from chilled to beats
Have you any Favourite tracks?
Too many tracks to possibly have a favourite. If a track sounds good, it sounds good regardless of genre, I like everything from Classical to Jazz and all things electronic.
How did you get into making the music you make and how do you make it?
I joined the school 50 piece orchestra once I had got half decent at drums and percussion. Full Blazer and tie job! This lead onto to a Jazz band in sixth form and then a Rock band at the start of Uni. It didn’t take me long to realise electronic was where my passion was and I started play electronic percussion in Nightclubs and Bars alongside Djs in both the main room and chill out room. Most notably playing with Radio 1 DJ Rob Tissera at his night in NATO Leeds.
I had quite a long time away from playing music once I settled down and started a family, although still an avid listener. My wife motivated me to start making music during the first Covid lockdown and after many months of trying to workout what every button and dial did I was then lucky enough to get a release with you, Brett, at Dark Heart
Which artists inspire you when it comes to making your music?
I take inspiration from so many great artists, all of the people involved in our local community are amazing and a huge inspiration. Not long before I started making tunes I was listening to ‘Maribou State’ and their album Portraits a lot so I guess this sort of stuff has left an impression on me.
What advice would you give to other music makers starting out?
For me the most important thing is to enjoy the creation. Make what you personally enjoy and are feeling at the time you are doing it, not what you think others will like. You have to put the time in to learn and experience as many different techniques as possible. Try not to get too reliant on Plugins, learn to use your Daw and all its features first before you explore the plugin world. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t get the attention you are looking for with your tracks. The fun bit is the making and everything after that is a bonus.
Are there any artists you’d like to work with?
I have had the pleasure of working with some brilliant artists already and hope to have more collaborations in the future. No one in particular springs to mind but I’m always open to the idea.
What are you currently working on?
I try to have a lot of tracks on the go at any one time, that way I can dip in and out of different vibes depending on how I feel at the time. I’m just bringing my second album together which I’m excited to be releasing soon on Dark Heart
Any artists you think we should check out?
It’s always fun to listen to the relatively unknown artists, there’s some real hidden gems out there. Some of the prominent reposters are brilliant at finding these artists so its easy to follow their lead.
